In 1972 Mr Enthoven joined the staff of the Ministry for the Environment where he developed environmental protection and sustainable development policies, serving as Inspector-General for Environmental Protection (1980-1988) and Director-General (1988-1994). In 1986 he was the national coordinator for the Netherlands’ emergency response to the Chernobyl nuclear accident. From 1994 to 1998 he was Director-General for Environment, Nuclear Safety and Civil Protection at the European Commission. From 1998 to 2004 he was Executive Director of NIBC Bank in The Hague.
He has chaired a number of advisory boards on sustainability and energy for the Dutch government and the Association of the Dutch Chemical Industry. He has also been Vice-Chairman of the Dutch Energy Council and a member of the Supervisory Board of a number of companies.
He is a member of the Governing Council of the University for Peace (UPEACE) and chairman of a number of foundations for sustainability, peace education (The Alliance for the University for Peace) and cultural heritage in the Netherlands.
Mr Enthoven has been Chairman of UPEACE Centre The Hague since its inception.
