Annual Report 2016

28 Jun 2017  As Chairman of the Board of the Alliance for the University for Peace (UPEACE) I have the pleasure of presenting you our Annual Report and our Annual Accounts 2016

As Chairman of the Board of the Alliance for the University for Peace (UPEACE) I have the pleasure of presenting you our Annual Report and our Annual Accounts 2016.

In 2016 our Centre (UPEACE Centre The Hague) delivered 6 courses in Peace and Conflict Studies and 4 courses on Business and Peace in the BA- and MBA programmes of The Hague University of Applied Sciences (THUAS) and provided modules to the THUAS’ Winter School and Summer School. We finished a 2-year research project for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Reconciliation and Justice in South Sudan. We organised seminars on Business in Water-Stressed Areas and on Peace and Sports, continued our lecture series Peacebuilding in Progress, and co-organised the ”Visions on Peace” MA thesis award of the Dutch Foundation for Peace Studies.

With these activities the Alliance, through its Centre, made a substantial contribution to the Peace dimension of “The Hague, City of Peace and Justice”.

In the five years of its existence the Centre so far has been able to put peace education on the map in The Hague with courses for over 500 students at THUAS and Leiden University College (LUC), research projects and seminars in the Peace Palace which were attended by hundreds of participants. It also initiated an ongoing tri-partite (IHE-Delft, UPEACE, Oregon State University) MSc programme on Water Cooperation and Peace.

In the course of 2017 the Alliance has entered a new phase, as THUAS and LUC have by now integrated peace education into their BA programmes and will continue in the academic year 2017-2018 with peace related courses, using their own instructors. Thus, UPEACE Centre The Hague will, for the time being, suspend its activities in the Summer of 2017.

The Board of the Alliance is looking into new possibilities to pursue its contributions to peace education and associated activities. It will continue to represent the Costa Rica based UN mandated University for Peace in The Netherlands and the EU and to facilitate its collaboration with relevant institutions in this part of the world.

On behalf of the Board of the Alliance I want to thank you for your interest in and support for our work in the past five years.

We hope to be able to inform you in the near future about our plans for the next phase.

With kind regards,

Marius Enthoven

Chairman Alliance for UPEACE
