Water and Peace

The objective of the Water and Peace Programme is to raise awareness and increase the knowledge about the mechanisms and processes which lead to water conflicts in the developing world.

The programme wants to contribute to solutions to prevent such conflicts or diminish their impact, in particular by finding new ways of water cooperation and the application of legal and other tools, such as water diplomacy.

Water conflict resolution is a process that unfolds at the intersection of scientific knowledge and societal processes. In-depth knowledge of the past, present and possible future physical and institutional setting of water systems is required before meaningful conflict mediation and negotiation can start.

UPEACE Centre The Hague is operating under this programme in the framework of the Dutch Water Diplomacy Consortium (2014) with its partners UNESCO-IHE, The Hague Institute for Global Justice, Clingendael and the Dutch Water Governance Centre by (co-)organizing seminars and conferences and providing consultancy services.

The possible contribution of companies to stability and peace in fragile countries through fair and good water management has been identified as another area of work for the Water and Peace Programme. In the Spring of 2016 the Centre intends to organize an international round-table in order to exchange business experiences and scientific insights as a run-up to dedicated water for peace initiatives with the involvement of business companies and other stakeholders.

Results from the programme will also be used in the courses on Peace and Conflict Studies and on Business and Peace for The Hague University of Applied Sciences.
