Henk van Schaik was Programme Coordinator of the Cooperative Programme on Water and Climate, based in the Netherlands, from its inception in 2001 until April 2012. His activities included promoting research on the impact of climate change on water systems at national, regional and basin level, assessing local vulnerabilities, preparing coping measures and encouraging water sector policy and organisational initiatives. He has co-authored several publications on water and climate. He was also a key organiser of global and regional events on water and climate, including events at the World Water Forums in Kyoto in 2003, Mexico in 2006, Istanbul in 2009 and Marseilles in 2012. He is an advisor to the UN World Water Assessment Programme.


From 1987 to 2001 Mr Van Schaik was a policy advisor on water for the Dutch government’s development cooperation programme. He carried out many assignments involving formulating, evaluating and monitoring policy on water supply, water resources management and environmental management, in countries including Bangladesh, Cameroon, Colombia, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Vietnam and Yemen. From 1976 to 1987 he helped plan and implement rural water supply projects in Malawi and Tanzania.
